Homerton Early Years Centre – Weekly Bulletin

4th March 2026

Message from the Head Teacher:

Dear Parents

I think we are all enjoying seeing some sunshine this week.

The Hindu Festival of Holi takes place this week, so a very happy Holi to any of our families who are celebrating this very colourful Indian festival.

We have been enjoying celebrating World Book Day/Week so thank you for sending in favourite books from home for the children to share with their friends.  There is still time to do this if you would like to during the rest of this week, or next week. Please put your child’s name in any book that they bring in to share.

Next week our Nursery classes are starting their visits to Rock Road Library in order to enjoy this great local resource. If you haven’t visited Rock Road library it is has a wonderful children’s room with many picture books and a beautiful garden with lovely spring flowers, so do pop along sometime. If you are able to help with walking the children to and from the Library please sign up on the sheet outside your child’s classroom, we would love to have you with us.

Excitingly we have our ‘Living Eggs’ project starting next week as part of our focus on teaching children about life cycles. We will have some fertilised chicken’s eggs incubating in our Library area and children will be visiting them over the next couple of weeks and watching the chicks hatching out and growing up.

Parent consultations for Nursery parents are starting to take place this week, and in subsequent weeks, again please sign up for a slot on the sheets outside your child’s classroom.

Just a reminder that on Wednesday 25th March we are holding our ‘Eggstravaganza’ celebration which focuses on Spring and New Life – this is an event for all parents and children to enjoy together in our garden at drop off time – 8.45am-9.30am.

We are having our Easter fund raising raffle on the 18th MarchPlease donate a raffle prize for this event by Wednesday 11th March if you are able to, some ideas for this might be – Colouring books, Crayons, New Toys, Books, Eggs, Smellies. Tickets will be £1.00 and funds raised will go towards buying and replacing equipment for our Nest and Nursery gardens.

Our language of this half term is Italian. Our resident expert Antonella has helped us in putting together the attached sheet with activities and ideas for you to enjoy with your children.

I am also attaching this month’s ‘What’s On’ with activities and events for families across Cambridge.

Finally, I wanted to let you know the exciting news that Mitali Peckham our East Room Teacher, has been appointed as our Head of Centre from September 2026, when I retire. Mitali will be working Monday-Wednesday, so we are advertising for an experienced Early Years Teacher to take on Mitali’s current teaching role on a Monday- Wednesday and to be our Deputy Head on a Thursday and Friday. If anyone knows of someone who may be interested in this position then please do come and chat to me or Mitali.

Medical Update: Nothing in particular to report this week
Some of the Learning this week

One of our South Room parents who is a scientist came in to do an experiment with the children to find out what colour the litmus paper would turn when different liquids were pipetted on to it. The liquids used were water, lemon juice and a water and bicarbonate of soda mix. The children were really fascinated by the changing colours that resulted when doing the experiment and also enjoyed dressing up as real scientists in preparation for their work!

Classes continued to enjoy cooking and eating noodles as part of our Lunar New Year celebrations

They were also able to continue using the chop sticks to improve their manual dexterity and fine motor development when the noodles were put into the builders tray as a play activity

We also had a hunt the animal activity in the garden with each animal being from the story of the Chinese New Year race across the river

Children enjoyed a lion dance in the Rainbow Room whilst their friends played musical instruments as the orchestra for the event

Our Nest children were really enjoying washing dolls clothes and then carefully pegging them on the line above – again this role play activity encourages the development of fine motor skills and improves muscle strength in the arms as children had to wring the clothes out before hanging them up

Our Nest children have been planting beans whilst also reading the story of Jack and the Beanstalk
