Homerton Early Years Centre – Weekly Bulletin

27th January 2026

Message from the Head Teacher:

Dear Parents

I am delighted to be able to tell you we have a new Parent Governor joining the team, he is Robert Rawlinson and he has a child in Nest Green.

The Governors play a very important role in making strategic decisions about the Centre.  Governors attend a half termly Full Governor meeting, and serve on one of two committees, which also meet half termly, and focus on Curriculum development, or Finance and Human Resource planning.

Governors are also there to act as points of contact for all parents. If there is anything you would particularly like brought up in our Governor meetings, then please speak to Robert, Bernie, Mitali, Ning or myself, who also serve on the Governing Body.

I am attaching the ‘What’s On’ information for parents which has events for February if you are interested in attending anything, or accessing support from Family Worker services.

Medical Update: Coughs and Colds continue so we are encouraging children to cover their mouths when coughing and continuing to teach them how to use a tissue
Some of the Learning this week

The photos this week have a particular focus on Maths, Traditional Tales and Physical Development. Activities that we plan and teach often target a number of curriculum areas which overlap, and it is always interesting to see how children access and enjoy particular aspects of our different activities.

The children have been acting out the story of The Three Little Pigs using coloured masks to take on the roles of the different pigs

Children have also been learning how to make the pig faces by folding and drawing on paper

West Room children heard the story of Jack and the Beanstalk focusing on the 5 beans thrown out of the window by Jack’s Mother and the beanstalk that then grew from them

Our mathematicians have been matching the correct number of pegs to the appropriate numeral. This is a great activity both for recognising numerals and practicing counting

Rulers also provide good opportunities to look at specific numerals whilst measuring the height and length of our garden walls

Snack time always promotes a lot of mathematical discussion from how many satsumas do we have, to how could we share them out fairly?

Our budding gardeners have been planting bulbs and we are really hoping they will grow by the time Spring arrives – thank you to Kate and Ilona for helping us with this activity

Classes have been testing their balance and co-ordination by doing obstacle courses in the rainbow room – the children then ended up making their own obstacle courses using our garden equipment in a variety of different and imaginative ways.
