Message from the Head Teacher:

Dear Parents

Firstly, a very big thank you to you all for fundraising so generously for our new air conditioning unit in the kitchen. It was installed over half term and as you can see from the picture below Angela is really happy.

I hope you have all had a good half term, whether your children were here doing holiday club, or at home. Thank you to Mel, Bridget and Maria for running our Holiday club and making it such a fun week for the children.

On Wednesday evening this week we are having our postponed Communication Language and Literacy Workshop led by Jacqui, and myself, so please do get a babysitter, if you can, and come along to the workshop which is on Wednesday 25th February 7.30-8.30pm.

Half term saw the start of number of festivals and events, including the start of the Muslim festival of Ramadan, the Christian festivals of Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, the Italian festival of Carnevale and the Asian Festival of Lunar New Year.

This year is the year of the Horse and the children have been learning about the story of the 12 different animals crossing the river in a race and then deciding to take turns being the most important animal for the ensuing 12 years in a cycle.

Just before half term Dong, Katy, Hyun-Mi and Masami told us all about how China, Hong Kong, Korea and Japan differ in the ways they celebrate this New Year festival. They will be telling us all about this again on Wednesday morning, so that our beginning of the week children, who missed it last time, can hear all about it. Please see the photos in the Learning this week section to get a flavour of this event and a big thank you to our staff for teaching us all so much about Lunar New Year.

Other highlights coming up in the next five weeks will be trips for our Nursery children to Rock Road Library to enjoy a story, and spend time in their beautiful garden. I am attaching some information for you to be able to join your child to the library ahead of the visit if you would like to do this.  A big thank you goes to The Friends of Rock Road Library and Central Library staff who are supporting these trips and are very kindly giving every child a book, to take home, as a gift at the end of their visit. We will be needing some support from parents and volunteers to walk the children to and from the Library, so please do sign up on the sheets outside your classrooms if you are able to help with these trips.

World Book Day/week for Homerton takes place from Monday 2nd March.  We are celebrating this event across the week by asking your child to bring in a favourite book from home to share with us all. Please put your child’s name in the book so it does not get lost.

We will also be having parent consultations for our Nursery children in March, again please sign up for a slot on the sheet outside your classrooms.

Another date for your diaries is our Eggstravaganza which is a parent and child event for both Nest and Nursery children taking place around the Nursery garden on 25th March 8.45-9.30am.

Easter Raffle Wednesday 18th March

We are having an Easter fundraising raffle on 18th March, so please can you donate any Easter themed eggs, soft toys, drawing materials, books etc for this event by handing them in at the main office. We are raising funds for more garden equipment.

Medical Update: I am hoping the break over half term may have broken the cycle of coughs and colds that seemed to be spreading across classes earlier in February.
Some of the Learning this week

The West Room children celebrated the Italian festival of Carnevale by making masks and enjoying dances in the Rainbow Room.

Natalie and all the staff had a lot of fun decorating masks too

Our building designers of the future have been busy creating cities using our wooden shapes. This activity allowed us to have a lot of discussion about different properties of shapes.

We heard all about Lunar New Year and the children enjoyed singing ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ in different languages.

Dong, Hyun Mi, Masami and Katy all dressed up in traditional costumes and showed us the traditional foods that are eaten to celebrate the New Year.  In Japan a whole long sushi roll is eaten, whilst in China and Hong Kong a whole fish is brought to the table.
