Homerton Early Years Centre – Weekly Bulletin

22nd April 2026

Message from the Head Teacher:

Dear Parents

I do hope you are all enjoying this warmer weather.

As the sun’s heat is now getting stronger could you please apply all day sunscreen to your children at the beginning of the day, before they come into Homerton, in order to protect their skin. We do apply sunscreen when needed through the day but it is helpful to know children have it on from the start of their day.

We would also really appreciate it if all children could have a named sunhat on their pegs, as we do not have enough spares of these in the Centre.

I mentioned last week that our school photographer, Helen Alderton, will also be visiting this term on the 12th, 13th and 14th May. She will be taking individual and class group photos and will be in South and East Room and The Nest on Tuesday 12th May, West Room on Wednesday 13th May, and the Nest again on Thursday 14th May. If you particularly want a sibling photo at the start of the day then please let class staff know and they will alert Helen. We are unable to do sibling photos at the end of the day as Helen leaves before pick up time.

Helen is also hoping to take some general photos of our Bear Hunt event for the website, which is taking place on Wednesday 13th May, so if any parents particularly don’t want to feature in these photos to go on the website, then please let class staff know. We already have a list of the children who should not be put on the website photos.

Please find below our vocabulary sheet for children to enjoy reading the story with you at home.

We’re going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen

Dear Parents / Carers,

We welcome the summer term with an adventure story – full of delight in exploring the natural world, with a wonderful repetitive text and an ending which inspires children to offer their own interpretation of the characters’ feelings.

At the beginning of the story a family set off confidently to hunt for a bear    and on their way they have to push through a field of grass , wade though a river  , squelch through mud , stumble through a forest   and find their way through a snowstorm   before they discover a cave   with a bear    and rush home , not feeling quite so brave.

Your children are already quite familiar with this story so they might like to use these pictures to re-tell it with you. If you speak another language as well as English perhaps you can also chat at home about the story in that language too – this can help your child make sense of the story in school if English is not their first language. It would be fun for us to know the words for e.g. bear or grass or river etc. in other languages actually so please do come and share some vocabulary with us if you would like to.

You may know already that we have a “Going on a Bear Hunt” event in school coming up soon so do look out for information about that event and we look forward to re-living this story with you then.

Thank you for sharing this story with us. J

A warm welcome to families who are new to us this term.  I wanted to remind everyone that Homerton is a no mobile phone zone, so if you need to remain on site when your child is settling then please bring a book or paper to read, instead of using your phone or laptop.

If anyone is able help with our Really Wheelie Trail on the morning of 20th May please let myself, or class staff know. The event takes place between 9.30am – 10.45am and is a really fun physical event for children involving biking, riding trikes and scooters, or wheeling a buggy around 3 laps of the Nursery garden.

Finally I am attaching this months What’s On so you can see family events happening in May for the Cambridgeshire region.

Medical Update: I am pleased to say there is nothing in particular to report this week.
Some of the Learning this week – Most of the pictures from this week are of children playing outside and enjoying extending themselves physically in their play.  Our monkey bars in the Nursery garden are particularly good for providing children with an extra challenge.

Children were enjoying playing a fun fishing game in Circle time whilst learning about counting and number recognition using dice and fish with 1-6 on them

West Room went on a bear hunt in our Old Orchard Garden and eventually found the bear!

One of our Nest room children was seeing if he could get his paper to fly

Children were developing their fine motor skills by drawing with paint brushes and pens and learning to sew

Outside in the gardens children were using guttering and ramps to see how fast they could get cars to go down the ramp
