Homerton Early Years Centre – Weekly Bulletin

15th November 2023

Message from the Head Teacher:

Dear Parents and Carers

Children in Need

Just a quick reminder that if your child attends Homerton on Friday 17th November we are suggesting that they either wear something yellow, or with spots on, to support the Children in Need events that are happening across the country.

Please see BBC Children in Need for a variety of ways to make a donation online, or over the phone, if you wish to. You can also donate at your local bank or building society.

Stay and Play in class with your children on Friday 17th November and Monday 20th November

We would like to invite any parents, grandparents, or carers who can, to stay with their children and play in the classrooms, or read some stories,  for an hour at the start of the sessions on Friday 17th and Monday 20th November.

Raffle Wednesday 13th December. Thank you to everyone who has started making donations towards our Christmas raffle. A couple of parents have asked me about what they should donate.  We have raffle boxes, both for children and adults, so if you would like you can donate a child’s toy or book please, for the adult raffle boxes some suggestions might be something to eat or drink, bath products, books etc.

Tickets, costing £1.00, are sold on 13th December, and the raffle is drawn that afternoon.  Please donate raffle prizes by 30th November to allow time for Tracey, and her sister Sharon, to wrap them for us.

Library book borrowing and class loan

We have a fantastic library here at Homerton so please do come and borrow a book for your child to read whenever you would like to.  There is a green folder on the library shelf for you to sign your books in and out.  Once returned please put them back on the shelves which are arranged in alphabetical order by the author’s surname.

Planning in the Moment

Thank you to everyone who attended our parent’s evening and play talk last week.  During the evening I talked about our planning and recording system so I thought you might like to hear a little more about it here.

The classes have just started doing ‘Planning in the Moment’ for children. This is an in-depth recording of individual children’s learning.  Each week we particularly focus on four children, we look at their particular interests and their learning styles, supporting them to further develop their learning. We ask parents for help to contribute to the ‘Planning in the Moment’ sheet, in order to get a full picture of the child, both at home and school.  Class staff will ask you to complete a quick sheet of questions when it is your child’s turn for ‘Planning in the Moment’. If you would like to learn more about ‘Planning in the Moment’, there is a book available, written by Anna Ephgrave, an early years expert.

Medical Update: Please continue to keep your children at home if they are unwell with temperatures, coughs and heavy colds, your support with this is much appreciated.

Some of the Learning this week

This week’s photos are all about celebration.  We have been particularly celebrating Diwali, the Hindu festival of light. The children have been making ‘diva’ candle holders from clay, dressing up in traditional costumes and exploring Rangoli pattern making in paint, on paper and on their hands. Thank you to the parents and staff here who talked to the children about this festival and really brought it to life for everyone. The children have had so much fun celebrating and have even started to decorate our sand trays today by collecting beads that fit exactly around the tray!
