Homerton Early Years Centre – Weekly Bulletin

15th January 2025

Message from the Head Teacher:

Dear Parents

I hope you have all had a good week and not been too cold.  The children were enjoying the frosty weather last week and noticed the pond was frozen over.  As it is been so cold recently please can we ask you to continue to provide your children with warm, named layers of clothing, including a coat, hat and scarf.

This week we have all been exploring the story of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. Classes have been enjoying sharing the story together, and in the coming weeks will be acting it out with masks. Everyone will also be reading a recipe to make porridge. Below is our picture story vocabulary sheet for you to enjoy sharing with your child.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

A well-known fairytale for the start of the year! Many of you and your children will already have come across this story a number of times and probably read many versions too. Your children are already familiar with

Goldilocks   wandering through the three bears’ cottage and finding the bowl of porridge   which suits her best, trying out the bears’ chairs and managing to break baby bear’s chair and then testing each bed until she finds one that is just right for a little sleep ….. until Daddy Bear, Mummy Bear and Baby Bear come home and she runs off into the forest

If you have access to the internet there are many video versions of the tale, for example,

http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/en/short-stories/goldilocks-and-the-three-bears which re-tells the story with a simple animation.

Also www.bbcgoodfood.com has some lovely recipes for porridge if you feel like experimenting at home with your own porridge.

In the Nursery garden we have a weekly adult supported focus. This week the focus has been on ‘How far can you throw the Welly Boot’ with the opportunity to mark and measure who has thrown it the furthest.  This activity is a lot of fun and incorporates both physical strength and maths.

Thank you to all the parents who have responded to the email about music and school fund payments.  I am so pleased that everyone across the Centre will be having the opportunity to experience Davina’s weekly music session now that she is going to be working for us as a music specialist on both Tuesdays and Thursdays. Below are a couple of pictures from her session yesterday to give you a flavour of the lesson.

Just a reminder to put in your diaries our Communication, Language and Literacy parent workshop, on Tuesday 11th February at 7.30pm-8.45pm. We hope to be able to give you some tips on what we do here to develop children’s language and literacy skills and to let you know what you can also do at home to support your child in this area.

I have recently found out about free on-line parenting courses which you may find helpful – if you google https://www.solihull.gov.uk and then put in your postcode you will be able to have access to these as the Council/NHS has paid in to Solihull as a provider for these. I understand they are really good and include a number of different aspects of parenting which may be helpful.

Please can we remind you that for health and safety reasons the car park entrance is only for staff use.  Parents should only enter Homerton via the passageways, in order not to have children and cars moving around in the same space.

Please could we also ask that you help us in keeping all children safe by not parking on the yellow zig zags outside schoolclosing all gates, and not opening doors to any children who may be coming in, or out, of the Centre without their parent.

Medical Update: There is nothing in particular to report today – just the  usual coughs and colds
