| Reminders and Requests:
Make sure your child has all their childhood vaccinations
The local NHS are urging parents and carers of children under five to ensure their children are fully vaccinated, especially those children who are starting primary school this September. Before starting primary school, it’s recommended that children have their measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) and four-in-one pre-school booster vaccine, which protects against diphtheria, polio, tetanus, and whooping cough. Many of these diseases have self-isolating periods of at least a week, which means not only will the child miss school, but parents/carers will have to stay off work too until the self-isolation period ends.
Cali Makewell, Integrated Vaccination Service Lead at NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, said, “Vaccinations are not only important for your child’s health, but they can help protect those around them too, such as babies too young to be vaccinated and those who are too ill to be vaccinated.”
Parents and carers are urged to contact their GP practice directly to book vaccinations.
Parenting Course available to all parents online One of our staff members Beckie Dunn in The Nest has recently done the Solihull Parenting Course and found it to be very helpful. Please see below what she had to say about it and the link to access it if you are interested in doing it. She said the overview document attached to this email was also particularly helpful.
Message from Beckie
‘I did the course to take away the stigma of a parenting course, which can feel a little bit daunting. However the course was a great reflection of how we support this approach at Homerton and the positive effect it has on your child’s development and wellbeing. Working with children in a professional environment to being at home can be a completely different experience however with this knowledge it reminds you its okay to step away for a second, reflect and reconnect with your child through their big emotional moments, making home life more positive for everyone. Sometimes as adults in a busy world we don’t always recognise the emotional impact in those stressful moments because there’s not many chances to have 5 minutes to reconnect with ourselves from finishing work to when the children go to sleep – but that’s when our children need us the most. The whole aim of this course is to support parents to have a positive relationship with their children.
I did the Understanding your child from toddler to teenager which covers the ages of 0 – 19 years. It covers different areas such as child and brain development, understanding feelings and reading behaviours, how to process feelings and tune into your child, different types of parenting styles, play, sleep, self regulation and anger, and tuning into your child’s needs and communication with your child. Each stage gives you the opportunity to reflect and practise the knowledge attained before commencing the next step, and questions to reflect on for your child and yourself privately. The course gives you parent statements in different scenarios which I thought was a great touch to the course as every parenting journey is different. A downloadable document of children’s developmental and emotional milestones is available which is a great tool to have to hand. There are also translated courses in selected languages and a voice over option and there are additional courses available for free.
I am happy to answer any questions from parents if needed.
I suggest using this link to access the course http:/togetherness.co.uk/ to go directly to the site and make an account.’
Thank you Beckie

Dear Parents
We are really looking forward to seeing you all at our Summer Celebration and Goodbye event, which is on Wednesday 15th so tomorrow. Please see diary section above for timings.
The Nursery children have now been given their Special Books and reports which I hope you have been enjoying. On Friday I sent out a Parent Questionnaire which we would really appreciate you completing if you have the chance. Our aim is always to try and learn from the experience of families here and improve our offer to them, so please do fill this in and return it.
Beckie Dunn, who works in the Nest, has just been telling me that she has done the Solihull Parenting online course which Cambridgeshire NHS buys into. Beckie said it was a really good course for understanding child development, and feeling a little reassured by behaviours she has experienced as Mum. The course she did covers the many phases and what to expect from toddler to teenager, but there are a number of other courses also on offer to follow. Please see the Reminders and Requests section above for more information on how to access the course.
We continued to have work experience students from our local secondary schools with us last week and a big thank you goes to them for all their hard work. Being here provides them with a valuable insight into the world of work and possibly helps them decide if they would like to pursue careers working with children. For us the experience of having younger adults is also great as children love having them here and it allows us to do some additional activities such as going on extra allotment, or park visits.
As you will know Mitali Peckham is taking over as Head of Centre from September, as I will be retiring. I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff and Governors for their support over many very happy years for me at Homerton.
As children will be leaving us this week, and going on to new adventures and experiences at school, we wanted to wish them all well. It has been such a pleasure and honour to be part of your child’s educational journey over the past year, or two, and we all wish you and your children the very best for the future.

| Medical Update: Nothing to report in particular but as it continues to be hot please apply sunscreen in the mornings, and help us in keeping your children well hydrated both at home and school. |
