11th November 2025

Message from the Head Teacher:

Dear Parents and Carers

If your child is in East, West or South Room then please do come along to our Parents evening and talk about how we learn at Homerton on Thursday  evening this week – 13th November 7.45-8.45pm – we look forward to seeing you.

Children in Need

If your child attends Homerton on Friday 14th November we are suggesting children, and staff, may like to wear their pyjamas to support the Children in Need events that are happening across the country.

Please see BBC Children in Need for a variety of ways to make a donation online, or over the phone, if you wish to. You can also donate at your local bank or building society.

Raffle Wednesday 10th December. Thank you to everyone who has started making donations towards our Christmas raffle. A couple of parents have asked me about what they should donate.  We have raffle boxes, both for children and adults, so if you would like to you can donate a child’s toy or book please, for the adult raffle boxes some suggestions might be something to eat or drink, bath products, books etc.

Tickets, costing £1.00, are sold on 10th December only, and the raffle is drawn that afternoon.  Please donate raffle prizes by 25th November to allow time for Tracey, and her sister Sharon, to wrap them for us.

All proceeds from the raffle will go towards giving every Homerton child a Christmas present and also raising funds for the air conditioning unit for the kitchen.

Library book borrowing and class loan

We have a fantastic library at Homerton so please do come and borrow a book for your child to read whenever you would like to.  There is a green folder on the library shelf for you to sign your books in and out.  Once returned please put them back on the shelves which are arranged in alphabetical order by the author’s surname.

Medical Update: Please continue to keep your children at home if they are unwell with temperatures, coughs and heavy colds, your support with this is much appreciated.

Some of the Learning this week

Our language of the half term is Polish – please see the attached information sheet with a few key words and phrases we will be teaching the children, as well as some information on festivals and favourite foods eaten. Thank you to Tamsin for putting together the sheet for us.

This week’s photos show how ‘Circle times’ are used to teach specific concepts which might be based on stories, maths, music, art, or understanding of the world around us, to name just a few of the educational areas we cover at Circle time.  We also use circle times to focus on personal social and emotional development, as well as celebrating birthdays or festivals.

Bridget used Circle time to talk about the number of candles on the birthday hat when a child in East Room enjoyed celebrating his fourth birthday with his friends. The Homerton Owl for the day always gives the child whose birthday it is a special birthday card from all the class. This year the cards have been individually made by Hannah our East Room teaching assistant – thank you Hannah.  Everyone also sings Happy Birthday and some special fruits are often shared together as a treat.

Our Core Book – Whatever Next by Jill Murphy

Whatever Next is the core book for this half term so I am also attaching a sheet for you and your children to enjoy reading together – The staff will be putting on a performance of the story on party day for the children!

Mitali introduced the concept of story sequencing with pictures on each of the pebbles from the story of Whatever Next during her Circle Time.

While Katy introduced the story to the Nest children using a really big version of the ‘Whatever Next’ book.

Other photos this week show the development of fine motor skills with children mark making, writing and threading.

Following on from our Fireworks display last week children have also been making their own beautiful firework pictures by dripping paint onto paper placed at the base of a salad spinner and then putting the lid on and spinning it. The end results were very effective.

Tubes can also be used very effectively to make pictures of fireworks bursting into the night sky.
