Homerton Early Years Centre – Weekly Bulletin

11th February 2026

Message from the Head Teacher:

Dear Parents

Thank you for all your kind words and good wishes during our Ofsted inspection visit and for responding to the Parent Survey.

Schools are no longer given a one word grading and instead we will be receiving a report card with different gradings for the different inspection areas. This report card should be available in about a month’s time so we will share it with you once we receive it.

Just to let you know that tomorrow evening’s Parent Workshop on how we teach Communication Language and Literacy has been postponed until Wednesday 25th February due to staff sickness.  Jacqui and I look forward to you joining us then instead.

This week we have been celebrating Chinese/Lunar New Year, which falls in the half term break. This year it is the year of the horse and we are particularly lucky to have Dong, Katy, Hyun-Mi and Masami on our staff team helping us with their expertise. They will be putting on an educational show for the children on Thursday this week, and the Wednesday after half term, explaining how the New Year is celebrated in their particular countries. Dong is originally from mainland China, Katy from Hong Kong, Masami from Japan and Hyun-Mi from Korea and they all celebrate New Year in quite different ways.

The children have been doing lots of fun activities from drawing Chinese characters or numbers on little red envelopes which will be coming home with a lucky coin or note, to cooking noodles and enjoying dragon dances.

In other news I am delighted to be able to tell you we have a new Co-Opted  Governor joining the team, who is Chris McNicholas.  He has a child in the Nest. Our two other parent governors Nelli Ferenczi-Houlden and Robert Rawlinson also have children in the Nest, so please do contact them if you wish them to raise anything at our Governor meetings.

Jake Ladlow who is our student teacher in West Room will sadly be finishing his placement with us on Friday. The children and staff have really enjoyed having him with us and we wish him well with the rest of his course.

Easter Raffle Wednesday 18th March

We are planning an Easter fundraising raffle after half term so if you are able to donate any Easter themed eggs, soft toys etc, drawing materials, books etc to this that would be great. We are raising funds for more garden equipment.

Medical Update: We have had a few cases of high temperatures coming on quickly for children. I am hoping that the half term break will allow children to really have a bit of a rest and get over their illnesses.
Some of the Learning this week

Here are varied selection of photos from this week including ….

East Room children going on bus whilst enjoying singing ‘The Wheels on the Bus’

Lining up and counting the fruit for snack time

The children in East Room played a maths racing game involving two class teams, a dice and two figures, who moved up the duplo board according to the number on the dice.

Hop scotch is a great way to focus on number and counting as well as developing physical and balance skills – Jake our student teacher has been enjoying this activity as much as the children

A parent kindly brought in some root vegetables from their allotment and children enjoyed washing them ready to cook and eat. We are looking forward to growing some vegetables on the Homerton allotment in the Spring

West Room have been doing a science experiment to see what happens when you put a gingerbread man in water

They found out it gradually softened and broke into smaller and smaller pieces as it started to dissolve into the water

The Nest have been exploring their emotions using the ‘Colour Monster’ book which is a great favourite and very good for helping children talk about their feelings

Lunar New Year preparations continued with cooking and eating noodles

Drawing on and decorating red money purses
